What to give a toddler this holiday: gifts that talk back

By Adam Linmore · October 18, 2026

The best gifts for a toddler have one thing in common: they need a person. Babies learn to talk by taking turns with a person who answers them, and a screen can’t take a turn. A gift that brings an adult down to the floor is a gift for language, too.

Gifts that talk back

  • Board books. Read them together, and pause long enough for an answer: a point, a sound, a word.

  • Blocks and stacking cups. Made for “your turn, my turn.”

  • A basket of real things. Pots, wooden spoons, a whisk, measuring cups. It is the same basket the home plan puts where the screen used to be.

  • Pretend play. A toy kitchen, a doctor’s kit, dolls, animals: anything that invites a story.

  • Play that needs two. A ball, bubbles, a tunnel, a drum and shakers.

  • Time. A homemade coupon for a weekly walk, a trip to the park or a bath-and-books night with you.

Check the age label on every toy. Small parts are a choking risk for children under three.

What about a tablet or an “educational” app?

Trials that taught babies words in person or by video found they learned from the person, not the screen. Most health authorities advise no screens under two, and Virtual Autism suggests none before six, as far as you can manage it.

Video calls with family are the one exception, because a person on a video call can answer. A grandparent who lives far away can still be part of the day.

For parents: give the grandparents a job

Grandparents and babysitters do best with a job, not a rule. Instead of “no screens at your house,” try “would you read this book with them every visit?”What to give a toddler this holiday: gifts that talk backBy Adam Linmore · October 18, 2026
