For parents

The home plan (chapter 15)

  • Give screens a spot and a time; everything else is screen-free by default.
  • Replace before you remove, hide rather than switch off, and expect a few loud days.
  • Talk, play and read, every day, with pauses long enough for an answer.
  • Pack the bag for the hard places and name the exceptions out loud.
  • Tell everyone who cares for your child, and give the grandparents a job.
  • Keep the evaluation appointment, whatever you see in the first week.
  • Then put your own phone in the spot.

Asking for help (chapter 19)

  • Ask early, in writing, with a date.
  • Bring a screen diary and put the number on the table.
  • Ask for the screenings by name, and for the hearing test first.
  • Take the evaluation even in the week you feel sure, especially then.
  • Keep a boring file.

Communication devices are a child’s voice, not screen time. Keep them.

General information, not medical advice. If you are worried about a child, talk with the child’s doctor.
